You know that old saying, “If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to see it does it make a noise?” I thought of it the other day while reading through some exciting new research on breast cancer.
Because if a breast tumor is so small, you never even know it’s there, is it even a real threat? The answer, in this case, is probably not. And that’s the reality this new research may have just delivered.
Let me explain.
You know the score when it comes to cancer. The smaller the tumor, the better your chance of survival. Because when they start to grow and spread, all bets are off. You’re now locked in a battle for your life.
New research reveals what could turn out to be a crucial piece of the breast cancer puzzle. And lucky for us, it’s not a Big Pharma drug that will set you back thousands of dollars a dose. Remarkably, it’s a single, common, and inexpensive supplement.
Odds are, if you aren’t already taking it, you’ve at least thought about it. And ladies, if it’s the latter, you might want to get started… and soon.
Because the new study shows how this one natural nutrient could change the game when it comes to fighting, treating, and beating breast cancer.
The fatty acids that could help fight cancer
You already know all about the incredible benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. After all, I sing their praises all the time right here in Healthier Talk.
Like how these nutrients are essential when it comes to good circulation and overall cardiovascular protection. But the new study finds heart support isn’t the only trick up omega-3’s sleeve.
It turns out omega-3s can potentially alter breast tissue in ways that can FIGHT breast cancer. And it has to do with what’s known as the microbiome in the breast.
Much like your gut, which has a delicate balance of bacteria working 24/7 to help with everything from digestion to immune function, your breast tissue also has a microbiome.
And we’re learning that certain bacteria may be able to absolutely rip right through cancer cells.
For the new study, women with breast cancer who were scheduled for a lumpectomy or mastectomy were recruited. The procedures would allow the researchers to examine the tissue in the breast and within the tumor.
The ladies were given either omega-3 rich fish oil or a placebo for four weeks before the operations. And when the scientists examined the tissues, the difference was downright astonishing.
Boost THESE bacteria to beat breast cancer
In that short space of time, the women who took the fish oil supplements had a jump in Lactobacillus bacteria. And that’s key because there’s emerging evidence that this bug can significantly slow the growth of breast cancer tumors.
This finding didn’t stop the need for treatment, of course. And, when given that late in the game – just a month before surgery – it may not make a huge difference when it comes to tumor size.
But there are other ways omega-3 supplements have the potential to help.
First, if you’re diagnosed with breast cancer and are considering your treatment options, supplementing may still help give you an edge against the disease.
Second, it’s entirely possible that taking this same natural treatment after recovery could potentially help ensure the breast cancer doesn’t return.
And third, remember that most women with the earliest stages of breast cancer, especially “stage zero” tumors, don’t actually know it. The tumors can grow so slowly you might never know they’re there… because they may never cause a problem.
By taking fish oil proactively, you could help keep it that way. The nutrient may help stunt the growth of these hidden tumors so much that they never grow and never pose a real threat.
It turns out, sometimes, ignorance really is bliss.
