Taking care of your teeth and gums doesn’t just leave you with fresh-smelling breath and beautiful pearly whites.
We’re just beginning to understand how critical “oral upkeep” is to our overall health. But we now know that maintaining a healthy mouth could literally help save your life.
You’re familiar with the standard tools of the trade. A quality toothbrush. A (safe) floss. A fluoride-free toothpaste. And perhaps a hydrogen peroxide mouth rinse.
All of which can be essential for strong teeth and healthy gums. And, as you’ll see in a moment, good oral hygiene can ALSO help protect you against some of today’s leading chronic diseases.
But today, I want to talk to you about gum protection of a different kind. And it doesn’t have a thing to do with any one of those standard tools.
It’s gum protection from somewhere you’d LEAST expect it. A natural solution that can give you an extra lift, easing gum disease, and potentially helping to keep you healthy.
And it’s something you’d NEVER link to good oral hygiene.
The seafood secret to HEALTHY gums
If you haven’t exactly been too rigorous with your gum care, there’s no need to feel any shame or guilt. The reality is, most people aren’t exactly great at flossing.
That’s a big part of the reason why two out of three seniors have some form of periodontitis or gum disease.
When gum disease is mild, your most obvious signs are tender and bleeding gums. As it gets worse, your gums can shrink, and you can suffer tooth loss.
But that’s not even the worst of it. The SAME bacteria behind gum disease can enter the body through bleeding gums and run rampant.
Those rogue bugs and the inflammation they cause are prime suspects in some instances of…
- cancer (especially colon cancer)
- heart disease
- Alzheimer’s disease
In other words, gum disease isn’t just something that triggers a lecture from your dentist. It’s serious business.
It’s a condition you need to get cracking on to bring under control. After all, your health is at stake. And new research reveals something you can try along with better brushing and flossing.
If you’re a regular Healthier Talk reader, it might even be something you’re already doing. And that’s taking omega-3 rich fish oil.
Fix gum disease with fish oil
I know it sounds strange. But the science is solid. And there’s nothing fishy about the results. In fact, a series of recent studies confirm that higher omega-3 levels lead to better outcomes in gum disease.
In one study over the summer, 300mg of omega-3s (180mg EPA and 120mg DHA) twice a day led to improvements in moderate gum disease on multiple levels.
Another study from back in spring on people with more severe disease found much higher doses – more than 4 grams a day – also led to significant improvements in key measures. And that includes that alarming bleeding from the gums.
And a meta-analysis of multiple studies found that omega-3s improved the gingival index, which measures how severe your gum disease is.
Now, don’t worry. Fish oil for gum care sounds like it could get a little gross. Who wants to rub fish juice into their gums? EWWW!
Fortunately, we AREN’T talking about some weird new fish-flavored rinse or paste here. The studies used ordinary supplements. You swallow the intact capsules as usual. Then the omega-3s end up in your bloodstream and do their business from the inside.
Just don’t end up becoming a victim of THIS fish oil mistake nearly everyone makes.
Of course, fish oil doesn’t just help shore up gum health, helping to reduce your risk for dangerous chronic disease. This gift from the sea is the ultimate twofer. It’s also been shown in other studies to directly help protect against heart disease and more.
