The plan is to lose weight and get healthier. And it should be easier than ever with the help of artificial sweeteners, right?
But imagine if, instead, you GAIN weight and get CANCER. You’ve been duped. Because one of America’s most popular diet options is a bust.
Artificial sweeteners are a common shortcut to fewer calories and less fat. But new research reveals they can have a deadly side effect. They could leave you locked in a life-or-death battle with a tumor.
Fortunately, there’s a simple way to avoid this risk. Better still, there’s also an easier way to lose weight and get healthy.
The cancer trigger hiding in your diet
The first move everyone makes when going on a diet is cutting calories. And, of course, the easiest way to do that is by ditching sugar, the emptiest calories of all.
But if you’re like many of us, you still have that darned sweet tooth screaming out for satisfaction.
That often leads to what may be the biggest mistake in any diet. And that’s switching to foods and drinks swimming in zero-calorie artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.
I’ll explain why that can backfire in a moment. But, first, let’s look at some new research that reveals yet another reason to avoid those sweeteners. And it’s turning out to be the biggest reason of all… that cancer risk I mentioned earlier.
Scientists say two of the most common artificial sweeteners on the market… aspartame and acesulfame-K… could raise the risk of “obesity-related” cancers by 15 percent. And these include some of the worst forms of the disease, including stomach, liver, and colon cancers.
But it gets worse. The same artificial sweeteners are also linked to a 22 percent jump in the odds of developing breast cancer. Plus, they’re associated with a 13 percent increase in the risk for ANY type of cancer diagnosis.
Others aren’t much better, by the way. Sucralose, for example, has been linked to leukemia. And while cancer may be the BEST reason to avoid artificial sweeteners, it isn’t the only reason to ditch them.
The big lie about artificial sweeteners
Even if you could magically set aside the cancer risks, no-cal artificial sweeteners are still a huge mistake. And not just because of that weird aftertaste, so many of them have.
Artificial sweeteners simply don’t deliver on their most basic promise. And that, of course, is the notion that they’re suitable for anyone who is on a weight loss or maintenance diet.
They simply don’t deliver. In fact, these artificial sweeteners may even end up “warping” your metabolism.
Studies show that people who switch to “diet” food and drinks with zero-calorie artificial sweeteners can actually GAIN weight instead of losing it.
You’d also think these sugar-free products would be better for blood-sugar control since they’re glucose-free. But you’d be wrong. Because over the long-term, people who consume no-cal artificial sweeteners actually have a HIGHER risk of diabetes.
And while a direct cause and effect link hasn’t been nailed down yet, there’s plenty of evidence that these products can switch ON food cravings and switch OFF the signal telling us we’re full.
One study found sucralose, in particular, could TRIPLE your stroke risk. And worse yet, one study found that women who drank the most diet soda had a 61 percent higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems.
The best move is to avoid it all. Skip the added real sugar. And sidestep the artificial sweeteners, too. And don’t forget to check labels for hidden sweeteners on any foods marked “diet” or “low calorie.”
Satisfy your sweet tooth with fresh fruit instead, especially the berries that can help protect and boost your metabolism instead of hampering it.
