Many old sayings have staying power for a reason. Their wisdom has stood the test of time. For example, the early bird really does get the worm.
And the same is true when it comes to beating an illness or disease. Don’t wait. Act early, and you’ll have a far better chance of getting what you want.
For example, if you’re just starting to feel the ache of arthritis in your knees, NOW is the time to do something about it.
Maybe they’ve begun to complain when you get out of bed in the morning. Or perhaps your knees start to howl whenever you go for a walk.
Do nothing, and they’re bound to just get worse. But address that arthritis pain head-on now, and not only can you reign in the damage, but you could also even begin to reverse it. And new research reveals exactly how to get started with a simple-yet-crucial step you should take as soon as possible.
It turns out common vitamin D could help halt the pain. Plus, this humble nutrient may help limit arthritis damage and ensure your achy knees never keep you from doing the things you love.
The sunshine cure for knee pain
Vitamin D is enjoying a real moment in the sun. A wave of studies has started to reveal the nutrient’s many benefits, from heart health to bone strength, to everything in between.
Yet despite all that attention, millions of Americans still don’t come close to getting their daily dose of this vital vitamin. In fact, nearly half of all adults don’t reach recommended daily D levels.
The picture is even worse for older folks. Some studies have found that up to 85 percent of seniors fall short.
In other words, chances are good if you’re a senior that your levels are running low too. And if that’s the case, you’re going to want to fix that fast.
But for folks battling knee arthritis, it turns out maintaining a healthy D level is even more critical. Because a new study has found that low levels of the vitamin are terrible news for folks in the early stages of osteoarthritis on just about every level.
The study finds that low levels of the sunshine vitamin lead to worse:
- pain
- disability
- anxiety
- depression
- levels of social participation
- physical performance
Those side effects, in turn, make it harder for arthritis sufferers to get up and move. And since exercise is vital for slowing down the degeneration inside the knee, it’s a vicious cycle. Less activity leads to even more pain and disability and makes you move even less.
Many older folks need at least 2,000 IU per day, and some may need to double that or more. Your doctor can test your levels the next time you’re in for a blood draw and help you decide how much you should be taking.
But when it comes to arthritis, don’t stop there.
Block arthritis pain with 3 easy actions
I wish simply popping vitamin D supplements alone would do the trick. But staying ahead of arthritis knee pain typically isn’t quite that easy.
But don’t worry. I have three more simple actions you can take to help ease the aches and avoid the agony.
First, make sure you plan some in some daily activity. When your arthritis is acting up, you might be tempted to skip it, but don’t. Because studies show that babying your knee can actually make the pain worse.
Walking, cycling, swimming, and hiking are all relatively low-impact ways to sneak in more movement without triggering more pain or stressing your joints.
Second, consider acupuncture, which has been proven to help ease arthritis pain. In one study, it was put to the test against both sham acupuncture and no acupuncture at all and won on every level. It led to LESS pain and MORE function.
And third, give your knees the raw materials they need to carry out their own repairs. To help slow or even reverse the progression of arthritis, consider a daily dose of Type-II Cartilage.
Studies have found this form of collagen can be even more effective than glucosamine and chondroitin. You can find Type-II as a standalone supplement or as part of a blend with other knee-saving nutrients.
