If you suffer from arthritis in your knee, chances are you could practically open a drug store with all the treatments you’ve tried. Because knee pain is nearly impossible to ignore.
You’re reminded of that with a jolt every single time you move… and sometimes even when you don’t.
And when that grinding arthritis pain starts getting worse over the weeks, months, and years eventually, you’ll try just about ANYTHING to help ease the ache.
If you’ve already found something that works for you without the risks of painkillers and other drugs, that’s fantastic news. And by all means, keep using it.
But if you’re still searching… or if you’ve found something that helps ease your osteoarthritis pain but not quite enough… then you’re going to want to know about this exciting new research.
Ancient pain fighters deliver modern arthritis relief
The new study tested two different combinations of natural arthritis relief remedies that have been used in India for generations.
The first pain-fighting dream team contains an ingredient you’ve likely heard of before. After all, I’ve often sung its praises right here in Healthier Talk. And that’s turmeric extract or curcumin. But it was combined with another ingredient you may not be so familiar with… tamarind seed extract.
The second formula had those same two ingredients but introduced a third one to the mix: mangosteen extract.
The formulas were tested against a placebo in patients struggling with arthritis pain. And they both delivered big and in the ways that matter the most to anyone looking for some relief.
First, the team looked at WOMAC scores. The WOMAC is essentially an “everything score” used to monitor the severity of a case of arthritis. The scale measures pain, stiffness, and your ability to get around on your creaky, achy, arthritic knees.
The two-ingredient combo cut WOMAC scores by 42 percent. That made it better at relieving the burdens of arthritis than the placebo by more than a third. But as good as those results were, the addition of mangosteen made them even better.
The second three-ingredient combo sent WOMAC scores plummeting by 56 percent. That was more than 50 percent better than the placebo.
Dial down the pain naturally
Those results alone are impressive enough to consider giving these ingredients a try on your own arthritis. But the study also tested pain separately.
Scientists use what’s called a VAS score to measure pain levels. The volunteers given a placebo had a 16 percent improvement in their VAS. (The power of the placebo effect.) Meanwhile, the lucky folks who took the two-ingredient and three-ingredient formulas had a 42 percent and 54 percent reduction in their arthritis pain levels.
If I had to guess, I’d say the bulk of the pain relief comes from the anti-inflammatory turmeric. But given the jump in improvement when mangosteen was added to the mix, this certainly seems to be a case where three are better than one for battling arthritis pain.
The study tested a brand name blend called TamaFlex with turmeric and tamarind and another called TamaFlex Plus that includes mangosteen. As an arthritis sufferer myself, I’m not personally familiar with either of them yet. But if you haven’t had relief from other options with these kinds of results, they might be worth trying.
When I searched, I was unable to locate TamaFlex Plus online. So it might be a new product you have to wait to hit the virtual shelves. Or you could try a brick-and-mortar store such as GNC instead. If you don’t want to wait, mangosteen supplements are also available separately.
But these aren’t the only option for arthritis pain relief, of course. Undenatured Type II Collagen, or Type-II Cartilage, is natural collagen from chickens. It’s a well-researched pain-relief option I’ve shared with Healthier Talk readers before.
You can find more details on Type II Cartilage, and several other arthritis pain relievers, in my earlier report here.
