Tens of millions of Americans are taking an antidepressant right now. And many have the same question:
“Is it REALLY working?”
If you’re one of them, I suspect you already know the answer. The fact that you’re even wondering about it means the drug is almost certainly not doing what you had hoped.
New research confirms it’s not uncommon. The study found antidepressants can fail on the two most important levels possible:
- They often DON’T deliver any real or lasting relief from depression
- They can pack some life-wrecking side effects
If your antidepressant doesn’t work for you, I have another option to consider. It’s one that, in many cases, can help as well as those meds or better.
But it doesn’t come with all of the sickening side effects.
The TRUTH about antidepressants
Some 40 million Americans are taking antidepressants. And you’d think that if the drugs were so ineffective, most of them would quit.
But they don’t, for one key reason: FEAR. They’re afraid of what will happen if they don’t take the meds.
Most have been assured that the drugs are working. They’ve been told that even if they still don’t quite feel right, that just means the depression would be so much worse without the medication.
The new study shows how much of a difference the drugs really make. And honestly, it’s disturbing. Because according to the research the antidepressants make NO DIFFERENCE at all for most people.
Many of the drugs – especially the super popular SSRI antidepressants – have failed to beat a placebo in studies.
Even more aggravating, many doctors keep refilling antidepressant prescriptions for years even though most studies only last 6-12 weeks. In other words, there’s virtually no real evidence for that endless long-term use.
And worst of all is what most people who take the meds know all too well: the side effects.
In trials, one in five patients reports the misery of side effects, including sleepiness, dry mouth, sweating, and weight gain. One in four have issues in the bedroom, and one in 10 have other problems, including muscle twitches and spasms, digestive issues, and dizziness.
Out in the real world, the numbers are even higher:
- 71 percent struggle with emotional numbness
- 70 percent say they feel “foggy or detached”
- 66 percent suffer from sex problems
- 63 percent battle fatigue
It’s enough to make you wonder how these drugs ever got approved in the first place.
Some BETTER ways to BEAT the blues
You don’t often hear this from anyone practicing conventional medicine. But the truth is antidepressants aren’t even close to the only option for depression.
Dozens of other natural solutions are backed by both science and real-world use. And in many cases, they may help improve or reverse depression without the misery of weight gain, numbness, bedroom problems, fatigue, and more.
Here are five to consider…
- Curcumin: This spice extract was proven as effective as the drug fluoxetine (Prozac) in a study, but without the side effects.
- 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP): This amino acid is often the first-line treatment for depression in Europe, where they’re not so chained to the prescription drug industry.
- Probiotics: They’re not just for digestion. Probiotics can also help improve mental health, especially blends with acidophilus, casaei, and bifidum bacteria strains.
- Exercise: No need to join a gym. Just get moving, as daily activity, in many cases, can improve mental health and even prevent or ease depression. Even a daily walk can help, especially if it gives you some midday exposure to essential sunlight (another natural mood-booster).
And for a bonus depression solution check out my earlier report Ditch depression in 2 weeks with 2 nutrients.
One important note: Just because the drugs don’t work doesn’t mean depression should be ignored. It shouldn’t, and you should speak to a doctor about it ASAP.
And, of course, if you’re already in treatment and taking antidepressants such as SSRIs, don’t quit on your own. Instead, work with your doctor to see if you have better options, especially if you’re among the millions who just don’t feel right even when on the medication.
