Turns out one of the most effective remedies for fighting off your on-again off-again back pain could be hiding underneath your comforter rather than inside a pill bottle.
Which is great news, because pain drugs have been proven to be duds when it comes to providing chronic back pain releif. Even worse, they come with a whole laundry list of potential side effects from addiction to heart problems to internal bleeding and even death.
But now a new study has uncovered something strange about our spines, which could very well turn out to be the answer to turning your back pain around.
Research has revealed that the cells in our spine essentially act like little factory workers, punching a time clock in the morning to work throughout the day, and then punching out again at night to get some well-deserved sleep.
Poor sleep is linked to inflammation and pain
But when we burn the candle at both ends—or restlessly toss and turn all night—those hard working cells can get all turned around. That means they have no clue whether it’s time to wind up to “go make the donuts” or wind back down because the baking is already done for the day.
The result of that confusion, according to the cell-based study published in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases, is inflammation. And I probably don’t need to tell you that inflammation typically translates into pain.
In other words, your lack of sleep could be contributing in a big way to your back pain. And while not getting enough sleep isn’t likely the only cause of your back troubles, getting a good night’s rest could go a long way towards resolving it.
Quality sleep should ALWAYS be a big priority
Since we’re talking about studies on cells here a lot more research needs to be done, of course. We don’t yet know for sure how these results will translate in the real world. But the truth is, since getting a good night’s sleep is important for so MANY health reasons quality sleep should always be a top priority.
Of course, when you’re already IN pain sleeping can be tough. But you’re going to LOVE my “prescription” for turning down the pain so you can finally get back on a regular sleep schedule: massage.
Therapeutic massage is hands down one of the best proven methods for helping to knock out all kinds of musculoskeletal pain, with one study finding it works significantly better than drugs.
Just make sure you do your research and get the real deal, because in this case a massage from someone without the right training might feel pleasant, but it could end up causing you more pain in the end.
