While everyone else was distracted…
When all of the medical attention was focused on the coronavirus…
While the mass vaccination effort was underway and making headlines every day as millions lined up for their shots…
The FDA pulled off one of its sneakiest and most underhanded moves of all time. They signed off on an Alzheimer’s drug that NEVER should’ve made it through the approvals process.
Even worse, they essentially admitted that it may not even work.
This sleazy move means millions of the nation’s most desperate patients may end up getting that drug anyway. And most of them will never realize there’s little chance it’ll help.
Dubious Alzheimer’s drug gets FDA green light
This wasn’t even a close vote. In fact, it was almost unanimous.
Last year, the FDA’s own advisory committee voted 8-1 against approving aducanumab, the first new Alzheimer’s drug in some 20 years. Yet, the FDA overruled its own committee this month and approved it anyway.
Three members of the panel QUIT over the decision. And rightfully so. Why even have an advisory committee if you’re not going to take their advice?
The reason they voted against aducanumab is pretty simple. The FDA’s own standards typically require two studies showing solid evidence of a benefit to win approval.
Instead, the two studies behind this Alzheimer’s drug were so lackluster that the independent committee monitoring them cut them BOTH off early.
The drug seemed dead in the water at that point. And nearly everyone agrees it probably should’ve been.
Except the company pulled off a last-minute Hail Mary stunt. They claimed the study also found that certain doses could slow the progression of Alzheimer’s by 23 percent.
That’s the kind of thing that would typically require a new study to determine. The FDA is even requiring that study, too. Except they ALSO went ahead and approved the drug already.
That means the 6 million Americans with Alzheimer’s who might end up taking it are essentially being volunteered to play lab rat.
An UGLY tale of Big Pharma GREED
But there’s a reason so many in the industry are champing at the bit to get this drug onto the market. Actually, there are 56,000 of them. Because that’s how much the drug costs: up to $56,000 a year.
As the kids say: CHA-CHING!
I wish I could say there’s new hope for Alzheimer’s today. And one day, I hope to be able to share that news with you when there’s a safe treatment that’s proven to be effective. But this isn’t it.
That doesn’t mean the situation is hopeless, either. Studies show there are ways to slow the progression of this disease without turning yourself or your loved one into a human guinea pig.
The best treatment options will depend on the cause of the dementia (there are many). So work closely with a naturopathic medical doctor to pinpoint yours.
In general, however, ginkgo biloba, huperzine a, grape seed extract, B vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, and green tea extract have shown promise against various forms of cognitive decline. Chelation therapy has also helped people when dementia symptoms are the result of exposure to heavy metals.
And that’s not all you can do. I’ve got a list of six superfoods that can help arm the brain against Alzheimer’s, and you can read it for free right here.
