The METAL that could cause Alzheimer’s disease
There’s a dangerous metal silently lurking in our food, water and even the air called cadmium. And while this metal is bad news for EVERYONE exposed to it, a new study reveals a specific group of folks are especially at risk.
It’s called cadmium. And it’s especially dangerous for the one in four Americans who carry the APOE4 gene that raises the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
In mouse experiments, slow-but-steady long-term exposure to cadmium led to the deterioration of neurons in the all-important hippocampus region of the brain. But the damage only showed up in the rodents who carried that APOE4 gene.
As a result of that loss of neurons, the APOE4 mice exposed to cadmium suffered from cognitive impairment earlier than the other mice. And they had a more rapid decline when Alzheimer’s disease did set in.
If you’re not sure if you have APOE4… or if you know you don’t have the gene… don’t feel too secure. Even without the gene, long-term exposure can cause the metal to accumulate in your kidneys and lead to a mess of problems, including cancer.
Drive down your dementia risk
You can be exposed to cadmium through…
- shellfish from polluted waters
- greens and grains grown in contaminated soil
- cigarette smoke
- air pollution
- water (especially in industrial areas)
Some of these factors are mostly beyond your control, such as the air you breathe. And of course, most people have no idea if their shellfish is from clean or polluted waters, or where their veggies come from and what the soil’s like there.
But you CAN minimize the risk by purchasing sustainable seafood, including shellfish and getting your produce locally from small organic farms. The stuff shipped in from overseas – especially China – where soil standards aren’t always up to snuff is far more likely to be laced with Alzheimer’s disease triggering cadmium.
And always filter your water, ideally with reverse osmosis. You can find smaller, affordable reverse osmosis filtration systems online. Or if you’re feeling flush, you can purchase larger whole-house systems.
