They say beauty is only skin deep, but I’ll tell you what aging sure isn’t.
Those outward tell-tale signs of the years passing – going gray, getting wrinkles and sagging skin – are just the start of what aging is REALLY doing to your body.
You see, we age on the inside too.
And while you may already be thinking about your bones, heart and liver chances are good you’ve never given much thought to your aging belly.
Bacteria balance is about more than digestion
No, I’m not talking about that spare tire or muffin top that made an appearance around middle age. I’m talking about the INSIDE of your gut.
Because as we age the bacterial balance in our belly can suffer. And when that happens it’s far from just your digestion that takes a hit.
We now know that everything from mood, to memory to blood sugar balance is influenced by our gut flora.
The longer we live the more threats there are to our gut-bug balance.
Things such as…
- chlorinated water
Get the gut of a teenager with probiotics
But researchers at the University of Florida have discovered the secret to recapturing the belly bacteria of a teenager – or at least a much younger version of you.
If you’re a senior it turns out taking a probiotic can turn the tide in less than a month, virtually giving you younger gut flora. Participants in the study who took the probiotic saw in an increase in both fecal bifidobacteri and lactic acid bacteria compared to volunteers who got the placebo.
And the benefits didn’t stop there.
E coli levels were reduced. And disease-linked inflammation – a growing problem as we age — took a significant drop at the same time, according go the study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.
Look for a probiotic that includes a variety of strains including Bifidobacterium longum.
