It’s happened to every one of us before. Maybe it was the garlic in the pasta dish you had for lunch, or perhaps in was the onions in your dinner salad, but whatever the cause you suddenly realize your breath is so bad it could knock someone out.
Sure, it’s true that nobody’s ever died from bad breath, but that sure doesn’t make it feel any less distressing when it happens. Regular brushing and flossing, drinking plenty of water and even taking a probiotic can usually keep your breath smelling sweet. But sometimes, even consistent, good dental hygiene isn’t enough and you need a way to fix your bad breath fast.
Following are seven weirdly effective natural tricks to beat back odor-causing bacteria and leave your bad breath behind…
1. Plain yogurt with cinnamon:
Yogurt triggers salivary glands, helping to eliminate bad breath. And the active probiotic cultures in yogurt chase down and zap hidden odor-causing bacteria. Meanwhile, anti-microbial cinnamon helps tackle any remaining bugs, leaving you with fresh-smelling breath.
2. Raw apple or raw lettuce:
Chewing on some raw apple or lettuce is a super easy way to get rid of bad breath. In fact, in a study published in the Journal of Food Science researchers reported that both apples and lettuce kept stinky garlic breath under control, slashing odor-causing elements by 50 percent.
When you’re fighting dragon breath and need a quick fix head to your spice rack. Sprinkle a few cloves, aniseeds or fennel seeds onto your tongue and chew. All three of these aromatic spice are natural antiseptics that can send odor-causing bacteria packing.
4. Citrus peel:
Don’t toss that orange, lemon or grapefruit peel. Wash the rind and pop a piece into your mouth to fight off stinky breath instead. Chewing on citric-acid loaded fruit peels will cause you to salivate, naturally freshening your breath.
5. Fresh herbs:
Most of know that chomping on some fresh parsley is a traditional remedy that’s often used to beat bad breath into submission. But it turns out mint, cilantro, are packed with odor-neutralizing chlorophyll too. (It’s what gives them their green color.) Plus raw herbs such as basil contain other odor-capturing enzymes and compounds. Chew on a sprig of any one of these delicious herbs to help neutralize the odor.
6. Baking soda and essential oil:
Instead of using a cancer-linked alcohol-based commercial mouthwash mix up a simple and effective homemade version instead. Combine one cup of water with two teaspoons of acid-neutralizing baking soda and 5 drops of a 100 percent essential oil such as peppermint oil, cinnamon oil or tea-tree oil. Use like you would any other mouthwash, swishing a mouthful around for a minute or so and spitting it out (don’t swallow it).
7. Apple cider vinegar:
Naturally anti-microbial apple cider vinegar (ACV) helps kill off the odor-causing bacteria that are behind your smelly mouth. Plus ACV goes to work helping to break down bacteria-laced plaque. Mix a teaspoon of ACV with a cup of water, swish around your mouth for a minute and spit out without swallowing.
