You’ve probably already heard a few horror stories about genetically modified foods. But the truth is those nightmares may just be the tip of the iceberg.
We simply don’t know enough about genetically modified foods to know just how dangerous these Frankenfoods will one day prove to be.
Here’s what we do know about how they may ALREADY be harming our health…
7 shocking truths about genetically modified foods
The foods you eat are the foundation of your health. They provide the fuel… the energy and nutrients… that run every single cell in your body. If your food isn’t healthy, there’s no way your body can be healthy.
These 7 chilling facts about how genetically modified (GMO) foods are harming our health will have you rethinking the fuel you choose to run your body.
1. GMO foods expose you to toxic chemicals:
As the name implies, genetically modified foods are literally being tinkered with on the genetic level to allow them to withstand being soaked in toxic pesticides and herbicides. These chemicals are so potent and dangerous that they destroy just about every other living thing in the fields in which they’re grown.
That means whenever you eat genetically modified foods your risk of exposure to those toxic chemicals skyrockets. In one study Canadian researchers were able to detect them in the blood of mothers, unborn babies and non-pregnant women.
In another study out of Germany, researchers said glysophate—the active ingredient in the most commonly used herbicide Roundup®—has been repeatedly detected in the urine, feces, milk and feed of farm animals as well as in the urine of farmers. In other words, the herbicide is in our food chain which means it is in us.
And in spite of promises from GMO food growers that the use of pesticides and herbicides would go down over time, as of just a couple years ago, they’re use was still going up.
2. GMO foods could do serious damage to your gut health:
A healthy gut is incredibly important for your overall good health. In fact, every day scientists are uncovering new ways in which your gut flora has a direct effect on your health. But genetically modified foods can upset your gut flora.
We know having enough good bacteria on board is critical for reducing insulin resistance and your risk of developing diabetes. Gut health plays an important role in our mental health and mood. And a study published in the journal Hypertension revealed that healthy gut bug levels can help us keep high blood pressure under control. A healthy gut can even help you keep slim and trim.
But here’s the thing… it’s a delicate balance of healthy bacteria in there. Which means being exposed to anything that upsets that balance on a regular basis could harm your health over time. And that’s where genetically modified foods enter the picture.
The pesticides and herbicides used on these foods can affect your gut bugs. In fact, glysophate—the active ingredient in the most commonly used herbicide Roundup®—was shown in a study to have negative effects on gut flora. And when your gut isn’t as healthy you aren’t as healthy.
3. Animal testing reveals frightening GMO side effects:
Animals fed genetically modified foods have experienced severe inflammation organ damage and increased risk of death.
For example pigs fed GMO soy and corn for 22 weeks had a higher rate of serious stomach inflammation than a control group, according to a study published in the Journal of Organic Systems. In a 2012 study rats fed GMO corn grew tumors and had pituitary gland problems.
And Russian scientists reported that female rats fed a diet of GMO soy over two years gave birth to pups that failed to thrive… growing slower and dying more often. Half of the pups died within three weeks, and by the third generation the remaining living pups were all sterile and unable to reproduce.
4. Studies have linked genetically modified foods to human diseases:
Numerous studies have revealed frightening links between genetically modified foods and human diseases. For example, a study by the Institute for Responsible Technology uncovered a potential link between GMO foods and the growing gluten epidemic.
Other studies have linked glyphosate to the growth of human breast cancer cells and hint that the herbicide may be an endocrine disruptor capable of playing a role in the development of
- birth defects
- and developmental disorders.
Higher levels of glyphosate have been found in people who suffer from chronic illnesses compared to healthy folks. And the herbicide may be linked to neurological conditions as well.
Diseases like autism, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s are often seen as an unlucky roll of the dice. But that’s not necessarily so. All three of those diseases have been associated with glysophate as well.
Herbicides not only kill threats to plants, but they alter the healthy chemistry in your body and actually change the way your brain works, which may be part of why we’re seeing more cases of these heartbreaking diseases.
5. GMO crops destroy the environment:
Listen this isn’t about hugging trees. It’s about being able to produce enough healthy nutritious foods to feed everyone.
Pesticides and herbicides are KNOWN to be dangerous. They strip the soil of nutrients, pollute the air, and poison the water.
No farmer or rancher can succeed with nutrient-free soil, toxic air and dirty water. And cross-pollination means non GMO crops and even wild plants are now being effected.
6. We’re creating superpests and superweeds:
Herbicides and pesticides are quite effective. They kill off almost every living thing in their path, including pests and weeds. After all, that’s what they’re designed to do.
But no weed or bug killer is 100 percent effective, and the ones which survive being exposed to the pesticides are developing a resistance to the poisons farmers are using to try to kill them. In other words, they’re immune to the toxins and they’re coming back heartier and stronger than ever before.
In fact, there have even been reports of frustrated farmers literally abandoning fields to the superweeds that have taken over and are impossible to kill.
7. They’re killing off the bees and the butterflies:
It’s far too easy to dismiss bees as an annoying nuisance. Or to think of butterflies as simply pretty. But that mindset doesn’t give either of them enough credit.
Both bees and butterflies are pollinating insects, which makes them nothing less than essential for crop and food development. And just how essential is essential? Think of it this way… the entire food chain could collapse without them.
The trouble is pesticides and herbicides don’t distinguish between “good” bugs and “bad” bugs. They just kill bugs, regardless if we need them or not.
The bottom line? Genetically modified foods are bad news for your health and the planet.
Whenever possible choose organic foods. After all, for now its the only way we can be relatively sure that what we’re eating isn’t GMO. Plus the good you will be doing for your health and the planet are well worth the extra cost.
If you can’t afford to buy everything organic, check out this handy “Dirty Dozen” list from our friends over at the Environmental Working Group.

10. Sweet Bell Peppers
11. Cherry Tomaoes(imported)
13. Hot Peppers
14. Kale / Collard Greens
Every year the EWG produces a “Dirty Dozen” list of the fruits and veggies that are the most contaminated by pesticides and that you should always buy organic, as well as the”Clean Fifteen List ” to choose non-organic items from.
