These days, you can hop in a car, plane, train, or ship and get just about anywhere you can dream of going within a matter of hours.
It can be the adventure of a lifetime, or simply an afternoon road trip. Either way it’s exciting.
Unless every mile makes you sick, that is. When that’s the case, you’d rather just stay home instead.
Simple tricks to avoid motion sickness
But you don’t have to let motion sickness keep you sidelined. Get off the couch and get back on the road, with these seven easy, natural ways to head off motion sickness.
1. Ginger:
This tried and true nausea remedy isn’t only for the stomach flu. The active substance in ginger, antioxidants called gingerols, can help relieve motion sickness, too!
Some studies have even found ginger to be as effective as prescription meds when it comes to soothing the stomach. Try sipping on ginger tea, sucking on a slice of fresh ginger or a ginger candy, or taking a ginger supplement to avoid motion sickness.
2. Skip the booze:
For many folks alcohol can contribute to their motion sickness. So, while a glass of wine on your flight might sound relaxing, you should probably rethink it.
On the other hand, experts say water can help settle a motion suck tummy. So ask for H20 and save the fancy cocktail for your final destination instead.
3. Eat something:
If you suffer with motion sickness, you might be tempted to skip eating before you travel. Don’t. Because as strange as it may seem, traveling with an empty stomach can actually make motion sickness far worse.
But keep in mind moderation is the name of the game. You don’t want to overeat, either. Pack some small snacks with you and nibble along the way instead.
Nuts, fruit and cheese are all portable, travel-friendly options that could help keep your belly calm. And, be sure to bring along a few ginger candies to help you avoid motion sickness too.
4. Find airflow:
Still stale air can make all of your motion sickness symptoms worse including nausea, sweating and clammy skin. Whenever possible, sit by an air vent or window to catch a breeze.
Try having the air blow directly on your face, or the back of your neck for the best results.
5. Claim “shotgun” in the car:
For many sitting in the back of vehicles makes motion sickness much worse. An easy solution is to ride as close to the front of the vehicle as possible.
And to avoid motion sickness make sure you always ride sitting up and facing forward.
6. A good distraction:
Travel with a good set of earbuds or a noise-cancelling headset, and something to listen to, to avoid motion sickness.
Music, an audiobook, or even white noise or nature sounds can all be valuable distractions. Close your eyes, and focus on the sounds, not the motion of the vehicle.
7. Acupressure:
According to the ancient practice of acupressure, a pressure point can help relieve motion sickness. Turn your arm over, palm up. About two inches up from your inner wrist, you’ll feel two tendons. If you start to feel queasy, gently press on this spot. You should feel better soon.
If you find this acupressure trick works for you, and you travel a lot, you might want to invest in a motion sickness bracelet. These handy tools have a small, plastic nob that keeps constant gentle pressure on the correct spot to avoid motion sickness, freeing your hands.
Don’t dread travel. From a trip around the world or a quick run to the grocery store, motion sickness doesn’t have to make you miserable. Ty one of these seven simple tricks to avoid motion sickness instead.
