I love wintertime. Snowy days, crackling fire, fluffy sweaters…Cough! Cough! Haaaaack!
As much as I love it, they don’t call it ‘Cold & Flu’ season for nothing. Nasty viruses and cold lurk around every corner.
In fact I came down with the flu recently myself. I’ll have more on that—and how I overcame the ugly bug in less than 24 hours in a moment. But first let’s talk about coughs
Coughing is your body’s natural way of clearing out the air passages in our lungs. And for or many of us the winter season starts and ends with one.
Did you know, a bad cough can clock speeds up to 60mph? With speeds like that were all going to have to run a little faster to get away from the germs!
If you’re hacking your way through a miserable cough, but don’t want to take a heavy-duty over-the-counter cough medicine you’re in luck. You don’t have too.
My top 5 drug-free cough suppressants
Following are my five favorite drug-free cough suppressants. One of these should help you tame your cough in no time…
1. Honey WITH COFFEE:
Honey has been used to treat coughs for years and years. Swallowing a spoonful or two calms the throat and has been shown to be just as effective as an over-the-counter cough suppressant ingredient, dextromethorphan (DM), according to the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2010.
In the Primary Care Respiratory Journal, researchers evaluated drinking honey with coffee every 8 hours and found it to be more effective than steroids!
Ginger has been used medicinally for thousands of years and has been used to help relieve a variety of conditions including asthma, migraines, constipation, and bronchitis. It is a superior antioxidant.
To make a cough suppressing ginger tea cut or crush ginger into small pieces and place in a saucepan. Add 5 cups of water, a dash of lemon and some honey. Boil the mixture until about half of the liquid remains and then sip (or slurp like I do) the tea. Do this every 2-3 hours for cough relief.
You can also put 1 drop of essential ginger oil in hot water and do a steam inhalation.
Bromelain is a natural enzyme that fights inflammation and infections. High levels of bromelain are found in the stems of pineapples. The enzyme has been shown to help reduce inflammation in the lungs which could help ease a cough, according to Alternative Therapies in Health & Medicine, 2012. Bromelain capsules are sold at health food stores.
4. FluNada (or similar):
FluNada is a natural cold and cough reliever that contains black elderberry, mint and eucalyptus. You use the spray both in your throat and your nostrils.
Start using at the first sign of symptoms.
5. Vodka or Brandy:
This is not your excuse to get sloshed on vodka or brandy but many seniors out there know that a shot or even just a teaspoonful of one of these liquors can soothe a cough within minutes, especially if you follow it with a teaspoonful of honey.
