Love handles. It’s a cute name. But few of us find it very cute when it’s set up shop around our own middles.
Experts say the average man or woman adds one to two pounds a year to their middle between the ages of 35 and 55. And middle-aged spread is tough to get rid of.
But don’t blame yourself. Becoming less active, and eating the wrong foods, can cause you to gain more weight.
But researchers say it’s not your imagination. Your metabolism really does start to slow down as you age. And that’s often responsible for your spare tire.
For many of us that belly fat is with us for the rest of our lives. But it doesn’t have to be.
Banish love handles with proven slim-down tricks
Following are four proven tips for juicing up your slowing metabolism so you can finally lose those annoying love handles.
1. Embrace your coffee habit:
Turns out coffee isn’t just delicious, it’s also a way to give your metabolism a modest, but effective, boost. Plus a cup of caffeinated coffee can lower blood sugar and insulin levels.
That means it could help you lose those love handles while reducing your risk for type -2 diabetes.
But skip the sugar and sweetened syrups, which will only add to your belly fat problem. Try a splash of cream instead.
2. Eat more avocado:
If you love avocados but fear they’re too fattening, I have great news. Despite their creamy, rich flavor avocados can help you kick start your sluggish metabolism.
Researchers say this funny green fruit can literally boost your body’s ability to burn through fat. Which means they’re terrific for targeting those troubling love handles.
Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fat, which naturally boosts energy levels. In fact, according to one study eating more monounsaturated fats speeds up your metabolism after eating. Which could help you burn through those love handles, and keep them from coming back.
Plus avocados are low on the glycemic index (GI). Like other low GI foods, they help slow the release of sugar into your bloodstream, preventing the insulin spikes that encourage love handles.
But don’t just stop with the whole avocado, oleic acid rich avocado oil targets belly fat too. In one study, volunteers who added three tablespoons of a high oleic acid oil to their daily diet shed two percent of their belly fat in just one month.
3. Sip on green tea:
Love handles have met their match in green tea. Studies show this antioxidant-rich beverage can help you shed fat, especially the kind that tends to collect around your middle.
Experts say the potent antioxidant ECGC boosts fat burning. And studies have shown extracts of green tea can boost metabolism by three to four percent, and fat burning up to 17 percent.
4. Spice things up with black pepper:
Turns out your pepper shaker is good for a lot more than just pumping up the flavor of your food. Black pepper contains a compound called piperine which may lend a hand in whittling down your love handles.
Researchers say piperine appears to encourage weight loss even when your diet isn’t the best. In fact, when mice taking piperine ate either a high calorie or high fat and sugar diet they STILL lost weight.
Experts say the spice likely targets metabolism, modestly boosting your calorie burn. But the piperine found in black pepper doesn’t just help you shed existing belly fat. It could also help shield you against adding to that spare tire by blocking new fat cells from forming.
