On the surface, vegetable oils seem like a great idea. For years we’ve been told they’re the healthier choice, and we believed it. After all, they’re made from healthy veggies and they have the word vegetable right there in the name.
So how could you possibly go wrong, right?
The vegetable oil LIE revealed
The trouble is, names can be deceiving. Because although we’ve been led to believe that canola, corn, sunflower, cottonseed, and soybean oils are the better choice, they’re simply not. In fact, these highly refined vegetable oils could be one of the worst choices you can make for your health.
Following are four great reasons you should dump your vegetable oils down the drain today.
1. They promote inflammation:
The way most Westerns eat is bad for their health. Our diet causes the inflammation that lies at the heart of most major illnesses, from cancer to heart disease. And one of the main culprits is our dependence on vegetable oils.
Vegetable oils are high in inflammation-promoting omega-6 fatty acids. And the typical Western diet doesn’t provide anywhere near enough inflammation calming omega-3 fatty acids to balance things out.
This means that all the veggie oils we’re swallowing are literally raising our risk of developing a major disease. In fact, according to experts a diet high in omega-6 and low in omega-3 is linked to…
- Obesity
- Metabolic syndrome (pre-diabetes)
- Type 2 diabetes
- Heart disease
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Macular degeneration
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Asthma
- Cancer
- Autoimmune disease
The healthiest omega-6 to omega-3 ratio would be an even one-to-one (1:1). But, realistically, most folks never reach that perfect balance, which is okay if you don’t exceed a 4:1 ratio.
Unfortunately, with vegetable oil’s popularity soaring the average ratio has skyrocketed to an incredible 16:1. When your essential fatty acids get that out of balance the result is inflammation, oxidative stress, and cellular damage.
2. They’re unstable:
Vegetable oils degrade at higher temperatures like those you need for many cooking applications. And as they degrade they break down into toxins—such as 4-hydroxy-trans-2-nonenal—which have been associated with liver problems, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other life-threatening illnesses.
3. They’re typically made from GMO crops:
Many of the crops that are used to make vegetable oils have been genetically modified (GMO) to be resistant to certain pesticides. This means these foods are exposed to large amounts of these chemicals, which have been linked to serious health problems.
Research has uncovered potential links between GMO foods and weakened immune systems, allergic reactions, and even cancer.
4. They’re bad for your heart:
Chances are you gave up cooking with butter and lard because you were led to believe they would harm your heart. On the other hand, you were told vegetable oils would help lower your cholesterol and protect your heart.
Well it turns out those vegetable oils aren’t helping your heart after all.
The omega-6s we talked about earlier are to blame. The inflammatory damage they’re doing can harm your heart far more than the omega-3s you’re eating can offset. Plus, to make matters worse an omega-6 heavy diet suppresses the conversion of plant-based omega-3 fats, called ALA, into active and heart-friendly EPA and DHA.
In other words, it’s time to ban highly refined vegetable oils from your diet. And while we don’t really recommend you dump them down the drain, as they could cause a backup. We do suggest you find a local recycling center to take them off your hands.
We also suggest switching to healthier oils. Organic coconut oil has a high smoke point making it great for cooking. And for cold dishes or very low heat cooking, we’re fans of organic, cold-pressed olive oil or avocado oil. And don’t forget, organic butter still deserves a spot on your menu too.
