Fighting a bad attitude? Or feeling a bit blue? We all could use a little mood makeover from time to time. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
Try one of these simple pick-me-ups to help you find your smile on a rough day and boost your happiness instantly…
1. Be nice to someone:
Those little acts of kindness – holding a door, giving a compliment – don’t just make the other person feel good. They really will help you feel better, too.
2. Dress up:
Take care of your appearance. Putting on your favorite outfit or strapping on a new pair of shoes can send your self-esteem soaring. When you know you look good, you’ll feel good too.
3. Spend time in nature:
Spending just one hour outside in nature is proven to boost spirit and mood. Studies have shown that it’s actually difficult to stay grumpy after an hour in sunlight and fresh air.
4. Smile:
Even if you’re not feeling it, smiling will boost your happiness by fooling your brain. We’re programmed to associate those muscle movements with happiness, so before you know it you’re no longer faking it… you FEEL good.
5. Hug:
A loving touch stimulates feel-good chemicals and decreases stress, two things guaranteed to boost happiness immediately. So find a friend and share a hug.
6. Collect experiences, not things:
Not only do new experiences themselves have the power to stimulate your brain and make you happy, the anticipation of an experience or event you’re looking forward to boosts happiness, as well!
7. Feel the feelings:
While it may seem counter intuitive to let yourself feel sad so you can be happier, it actually works. Research has revealed it’s easier to let go of negative emotions and get back to being happy when allow yourself to experience the unhappy feelings instead of avoiding them or pretending they don’t exist.
8. Get a pet:
People with pets aren’t just happier they live longer, are healthier and have greater self-esteem. Adopt a furry friend and you’ll change 2 lives.
9. Sleep longer AND better:
One study showed getting just one extra hour of sleep boosts happiness as much as getting a raise at work would! And another study pointed to quality of sleep being the real key. Regardless of quantity or quality, sleep is definitely linked to happiness.
10. Chat:
Simply chatting with others triggers feelings of happiness. No need to have deep conversations. It can be a quick, friendly exchange with the mailman or a salesclerk. The key is to connect with other people for a total of an hour a day.
11. Connect to something greater than yourself:
More than 300 studies have linked spirituality and religion to a greater sense of happiness and well-being. So whether it’s peace in nature, the stars, or a place of worship, find something larger than yourself to connect to and embrace it.
12. Laugh:
Laughter relieves stress, eases depression, calms anxiety, and yes, boosts your happiness. So if it’s reading a comic strip, watching a funny movie, or laughing with friends, find ways to let loose with a belly laugh every single day.
13. Make your home happy:
If you surround yourself with things you love, that make you happy, it follows that you’ll be happy. From candles to music to the plates on your table and the color of your walls, make your home your literal happy place.
14. Be thankful:
Make a conscious effort to be thankful for the little things, not just the big ones, and your whole outlook will improve. Look for the small gifts, such as scoring a parking spot close to the door or running into an old friend at the grocery store, and you’ll find them.
15. Follow your passion:
Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn to dance. Or maybe you used to love to paint, but had to give it up years ago. Now’s the time to take it up for the first time – or pick it up again. Doing what you love is a guaranteed happiness booster.
Life sometimes hands you a few lemons but when it does just reach for the stevia. Boost your happiness and reclaim your life, one happy moment at a time.
